  • Tips and Tricks: Managing Separation Anxiety in Dogs

I don’t know about you but December tends to be a busier month than the others especially if you are celebrating Christmas, multiple birthdays within your inner circle, and doing year-end routines and traditions. It also means going out more often which requires leaving pets behind at home. By themselves. Cats may be okay with it generally but for a lot of dogs, it’s not. Our little shih tzu whines and barks incessantly when left behind. He also scratches the door and pees or poops but fortunately runs to the farthest corner of his toilet to do it. Just a bit of context, Yes, he has his space that other households may call a guest toilet but since we rarely have any guests over (and when they do we offer our toilet), we call it the pets toilet. They have a sink where their stuff is washed, where their food is prepped, and where they get groomed in between visits to groomers. But that’s tea for another day. It is difficult to leave our dog even with people he is familiar with, even with his gramps whom he loves, because he’d be acting all sad and aggressive or both and, yep, run to their toilet to relieve himself which, quite understandably, is not always appreciated. If your fur baby shows behaviors that indicate they don’t appreciate being left alone or with people other than you, then they may be experiencing separation anxiety. Separation anxiety in dogs can be observed as distress and even destructiveness when they are away from the humans that they have formed an attachment to. It can have various causes, including past experiences of abandonment or changes in living arrangements (1,2). Dogs are social animals that form strong bonds with their owners and can become distressed when left alone. To manage separation anxiety in your pet doggos, here are some strategies that are helping us and maybe you can try: Gradual Desensitization: Start by leaving your dog alone for short periods and gradually increase the duration over time. This helps them become accustomed to your absences and reduces their anxiety (1,3). We are actively trying this strategy but since ours is a senior dog who has never gotten used to being completely left on his own since he was adopted, this was challenging. However, we are seeing positive results in the way that their toilet is clean and the cat seems relaxed whenever we get home. Side note: We can tell the dog has stressed the cat out with his howling and whining if the door dust stopper has been scratched to shreds. Create a Safe and Comfortable Environment: Provide a designated space for your dog when you're away, such as a crate or a quiet room. Make sure the area is safe, stocked with familiar toys, and has a comfortable bed or blanket. This can help them feel secure and reduce anxiety (1,4). We keep his familiar spot by the window easily accessible to him as he enjoys watching dogs walking outside with their owners/sitters. We also leave the TV on and keep Dog TV playing as this seems to help. Counterconditioning: Associate your departures with positive experiences by giving your dog a special treat or a food puzzle toy just before you leave. This helps create positive associations with your absence (1,4). Taking him out for a walk just before you leave is also a great idea. Leave Calmly and Return Calmly: Avoid making a big fuss or long goodbyes when leaving the house. Similarly, when you return, greet your dog calmly after they have settled down. This helps establish a sense of routine and reduces anxiety associated with arrivals and departures (1,3). Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Engage your dog in physical exercise and mental activities before leaving. A tired dog is more likely to be relaxed and settle down when you're away. Long walks, play sessions, and puzzle toys can help drain their energy (3). It can also be a helpful distraction and keep them happier. Seek Professional Help: If your dog's separation anxiety persists or worsens, consider consulting with a veterinarian or a professional dog behaviorist. They can provide tailored advice and develop a behavior modification plan to address your dog's specific needs (1). Remember, managing separation anxiety takes time and patience. Consistency and gradual exposure to your absence are key to helping your Shih Tzu cope with their anxiety when left alone. I hope this has been helpful. Until next time! Sources: ASPCA. • The Stinky Reality of Food Waste and How You Can Make a Difference at Home

Here is the first thing I notice every single time I pass by a dumpster: The distinct smell of rotting food. Seriously, people don't just toss away food scraps but actual edible food into their trash like it’s nothing, just mindlessly chucking half a burger or something for whatever reason. I've seen it normalized on old TV shows and films where a character nonchalantly tips a whole plate of perfectly good food into the trash, like WTF! This isn’t normal! I recoil like how I do every time an actor onscreen brings their feet up on the couch or bed with their shoes on. I mean, Que horror! But I digress. Wasting food is even more cringe in my humble book. Food waste refers to food that is edible but is thrown away rather than consumed (1). This does not only happen at home though. Food waste includes food that is discarded at the farm, retail, and consumer phases of the food supply chain. These include the "ugly" produce that gets left behind at the farm or at grocery counters because they are not perfect enough for the buyers. The Negative Impact of Food Waste Food waste has negative impacts both locally and globally. What does it mean? It means that its negative effects are not limited to who is doing the wasting or where it is happening. Not to sound too dramatic but it affects other aspects of our lives, other people's lives, our environment, and everything else in it. The negative impacts of food waste include: Environmental Impacts: Food waste is a significant and growing contributor to climate change and environmental degradation. It contributes to the release of greenhouse gases such as methane, which has a much greater warming effect than carbon dioxide. Additionally, food waste in landfills can contaminate soil and water and contribute to the depletion of natural resources such as soil, water, and energy(1,2). Economic Impacts: Food waste has economic consequences at every stage of the food supply chain. It leads to increased disposal costs for businesses, municipalities, and individuals. It also results in lost revenue for farmers and reduces the overall efficiency of the food system(1,3). Social Impacts: Food waste perpetuates food insecurity by reducing the amount of food available for those in need. It also contributes to higher food prices and food loss for vulnerable populations(1,4). By addressing food waste, we can reduce its negative impacts and promote a more sustainable and equitable food system. Farms, I sure hope, have their way of limiting these negative impacts. A cost-effective and sustainable approach is to turn their waste into compost and fertilizer, which in my humble opinion, no self-respecting farmer would not say no to. Tips to Reduce Food Waste (and SAVE money!) Here are 8 crazy easy ways to reduce food waste at home (5,6): Plan your meals: Create a weekly meal plan and make a shopping list based on the ingredients you need. This helps you buy only what you will use, reducing the chances of food going to waste. For busy bees who do not always have enough time to cook, creating a meal prep and storing them can even ensure that you have your food ready anytime you need it. This leads us to tip #2. 2. Proper storage: Check the temperature settings of your fridge and keep it at 40°F or below (6). This helps extend the shelf life of perishable items. In addition, keep your fridge and pantry organized so that you can easily see and use items before they expire (7). 3. First in, first out: Practice the "first in, first out" rule when stocking your fridge and pantry. Use older items before newer ones to ensure nothing gets forgotten and wasted (7). 4. Freeze leftovers: If you have leftovers that you won't consume immediately, freeze them for later use. Label them with dates to keep track of their freshness. When you decide to use it, you can either heat it up and eat it as is, or "revise" it like I always end up doing with my leftover food. For example, leftover rice almost always becomes fried rice, or chicken adobo might get updated with chopped potatoes or boiled eggs. 5. Use leftovers creatively: Instead of throwing away leftovers, get creative and repurpose them into new meals. For example, leftover vegetables can be used in stir-fries, soups, or veg stock, and stale bread can be turned into rusks, breadcrumbs, or croutons. 6. Preserve and can: If you have excess produce that you won't be able to consume in time, consider preserving or canning them. I especially like making jams and pickles. This helps extend their shelf life, allowing you to enjoy them later. 7. Be mindful of portion sizes: Serve yourself and your family realistic portion sizes to avoid food waste. You can always go back for seconds if needed. 8. Donate excess food: Consider donating excess food to local food banks or charitable organizations. Find out in your neighborhood who needs an extra hand and if you can't find any, the rest of the world is a pretty big place to find one or two. In fact, a lot of kids and families in places like Gaza and Sudan would be very happy with your food gifts. Donating your excess pantry staples ensures that food gets to those in need instead of going to waste. By implementing these simple strategies, you can significantly reduce food waste at home and contribute to a more sustainable food system. I may not have been the best at managing food waste in my own kitchen and I do not claim to be, but we could all learn something a little bit each day and be able to make a conscious effort moving forward. A little goes a long way. I hope this has helped you in some way. If you have more ideas, please share them, too. Sources: Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. (n.d.). • Clear Space, Clear Mind: How to Declutter to Improve Mental Health

Let us keep it short, simple, and straightforward, shall we? It's always better that way. What does clutter do? Clutter has a tendency to overwhelm. When our spaces are organized and free of clutter, we can see the space around us clearly, and that can be calming and even energizing. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by helping us to recognize the physical and emotional boundaries that we often lose sight of when our living space is filled with too much “stuff”. Clutter can contribute to anxiety as it can prevent us from being able to focus on the present moment. Multiple academic studies have shown that constant visual reminders of disorganization drain our cognitive resources, increase cognitive overload, and decrease our working memory, it contributes to anxiety, depression, and stress, and it affects our physical health (Read source). In short, clutter is bad for our brain functioning, our mental health, and overall well-being. What does decluttering do? Decluttering can help us to appreciate the things we have and to recognize our individual needs. It gives us an opportunity to categorize our possessions, examine them, appreciate their roles in our lives, and identify what is important to us. It can also help us to create a space that is conducive to and caters to our own individual needs, which can lead to increased feelings of contentment and appreciation for life's small blessings. Decluttering allows us to create a peaceful, organized environment where we can thrive. This can improve mental health by increasing self-awareness and mindfulness. This improved sense of mental well-being can help us to better identify our own needs and preferences, giving us a greater sense of security and control. Finally, it can help us to gain clarity of our goals and values, which can lead to increased motivation, productivity, and sense of self-worth. How to declutter: Decluttering your home and your space can be daunting, but it is possible with the right plan and approach. To start, it’s important to set realistic expectations. You may not be able to declutter your entire home in one day, and that’s okay. Taking small steps and focusing on one area at a time is the best way to approach the task. The basics of decluttering are to get rid of items you no longer need or use. Ask yourself if you truly need the item and if not, get rid of it. One that works well is to create a "keep" pile, a "donate" pile, and a trash pile. Then go through your items one by one and put them accordingly on the right pile. Take your time. Don’t get distracted or overwhelmed by sentimental items. Instead, focus on the task at hand. When organizing, it is important to create a system that works for you. Group similar items together and create categories. For example, you can do closet items today, and from these items, you can categorize them according to their uses, i.e., office clothes, workout/gym wear, warm clothes, summer clothes, jeans, tops, etc. Once you are done with this stage, you are halfway there, because this is always the hardest part for me. It's hard to let go of something you have committed to buying, only to find out later on that you didn't actually need it. Maintaining your decluttered space is the key to success. Set aside time each day or week to put items away, clean up, and reorganize. You can label items to make them easier to find. it also helps to utilize vertical space and add storage containers, if needed. Also, be mindful of what you bring into the space. Don’t fall back into your old hoarding habits. Use your items until you feel they are no longer of value to you before you add more stuff into your space. Overall, decluttering your home and space is an achievable task. Start by setting realistic goals and focus on one area at a time. Get rid of items you no longer need or no longer serve you. Take a good look at your environment and ask yourself if this is the kind of life you want to live. You will find the answer within you. I hope this article has added value to you today. if you have any questions or suggestions related to this topic, feel free to drop a comment or send us a message.

I don’t know about you, but I think owning a garden is a privilege that many out there do not get a chance to have. They may be lacking in space to cultivate one, some may not have the time that a full-scale garden demands, while others simply do not have enough knowledge and talent (yes, it also takes talent, green thumb and all) to get into the hobby. Do you know what else makes it even more interesting? A garden can be easily monetized. Taking your garden to another level, i.e., monetizing it, is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself today. If you wanna know why you should and learn about easy ways to do it, read on. Benefits of Monetizing Your Garden Here are some of the most common reasons why there is a growing interest in monetizing gardens. Supplemental Income: A little extra change in the pocket wouldn't hurt, now would it? For many people, monetizing their garden can provide an additional source of income. This can be particularly appealing for those who enjoy gardening and have excess produce, plants, and/or products to sell. Sustainable Living: Growing one's food is a great way to reduce dependence on the grocery store for fresh and healthy produce. By monetizing their garden, individuals can not only grow food for themselves but also for others in their community. This can also promote sustainable living and reduce food waste. Hobby and Passion: Gardening can be a hobby and passion for many individuals. Monetizing their garden can allow them to share their expertise with others and promote gardening as a sustainable and enjoyable hobby. Entrepreneurship: For individuals interested in starting their business, monetizing their garden can be a great starting point. It can provide an opportunity to develop new products and services while gaining valuable entrepreneurial experience. Community Building: By monetizing their garden, individuals can connect with their community, meet new people, and support local food systems. Having a garden can also facilitate opportunities for community gardening and educational events, promoting a sense of community building and sharing. Simple Ways to Earn From Your Garden If you have a garden or are interested in cultivating one, there are several ways you can monetize it using e-commerce that will not drain you mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you are in a creative slump, you are free to take a break. Remember that the main purpose of this journey is to be able to release unnecessary stress, so make that a priority. Happy gardening!

  • Cats do get anxiety. Here are tips to manage it.

My cat has anxiety issues. Yup. It is not an exclusively human thing. Even our pets can get them, too. According to Dr. Krista Sirois, a veterinarian and clinical behavior resident, anxiety in cats can be caused by the following (source): Physical illness or pain A traumatic experience Lack of positive social and environmental exposure Abandonment and being separated from their human parents (separation anxiety) Signs of cat anxiety can be observed in their behavior. When exposed to the stimulant or trigger, cats may suddenly become withdrawn, even aggressive in certain cases. My cat gets violent with the groomers, hissing, biting, clawing, and refusing to be touched. When cats get stressed or terribly anxious, you may observe dilated pupils (I would describe them as panicky eyes), crouching, wrapping their tails tight around their bodies, hiding, and increased heart and respiratory rates (read more). With my cat, the trigger to his fear and anxiety is “the outside”. He is scared of going outdoors and what goes on on the other side of the main door. Opening the door or a window where he can hear the sound of cars, people, changes in smell, etc., gets him into a panic. He gets so worked up, sniffing the air around him, looking around with wild eyes, scrambling away to a hiding spot, and withdrawing. Whenever we take him outside - to the beach, parks, to the groomers - he would act strange and wouldn't want to walk or even move. When he’s in the car, he has to be cuddled and will only stay calm as long as he doesn’t have to look outside. He gets back to his normal self as soon as he gets home, though. Managing Cat Anxiety Cat anxiety is not uncommon for cats that were previously stray or have had negative experiences outdoors. My cat was a stray. He followed us home one day while we were taking our dog for a walk. Long story short, when the cat refused to leave our door, refused to eat the food we were trying to give him, and instead kept begging/trying to get in every time the door opened, we had to take him in. If your formerly stray cat or rescue cat is behaving the same way our cat does, you and I are not unique in that. If you are hoping to address it without resorting to medication, here are some tips that may help reduce your cat’s anxiety naturally (and maybe yours, too) : Desensitization: Your cat may be overwhelmed by new and unfamiliar environments (fear of the unknown). It is essential to introduce new experiences gradually. Start by exposing your cat to less intimidating outdoor environments, such as a quiet backyard, to help them acclimate in a controlled setting. Counterconditioning: Stray cats might have faced traumatic events outdoors, leading to fear and anxiety. It may take time and patience to help your cat overcome these anxieties. Create positive associations with outdoor experiences by providing treats, toys, and praise during outings to help your cat associate outdoors with positive experiences. Provide a Sense of Security: The outdoors can be overwhelming for cats due to unfamiliar sounds, smells, and sights (sensory overload). Consider using a cat harness and leash to provide a sense of security while exploring new environments. Use a carrier or a covered stroller if your cat feels more secure inside an enclosed space. Positive Reinforcement: Gradually introduce your cat to new environments by offering short, controlled outings. Start with quiet places and gradually increase the complexity of the environment. Reward your cat's calm behavior with treats and praise to reinforce positive experiences. Create Safe Spaces Indoors: Provide your cat with safe and comfortable spaces indoors where they feel secure. This can be a designated room or area with their bed, toys, and a scratching post. Having a safe space to retreat to can help reduce anxiety and provide a sense of security. Consult with a Veterinarian or Behaviorist: If your cat's anxiety continues despite your efforts, it may be beneficial to seek guidance from a veterinarian or an animal behaviorist. They can assess your cat's specific needs and recommend targeted strategies or interventions to manage their fear and anxiety. Having said all that, here’s a disclaimer. Each cat is unique. These tips may not work on your cat within the next few days and we should not expect it to over a very short period of time. It may take longer and a bit of patience to help your cat feel more comfortable outdoors. Be understanding and supportive, and with consistent positive experiences, you can help your cat overcome their fears and enjoy outdoor activities. Meow!

  • 9 Essentials when Building an Online Shop to Sell Digital Products Successfully

In my previous post, I talked about how digital product sales are on the rise and specifically what digital products generally sell fast. This time, we will talk about these nine essential steps that we can consider when building an online shop since it is primarily how we reach a larger customer base as sellers nowadays. Also, creating a solid online presence helps strengthen your brand and credibility which in turn expands your audience reach and the opportunity to translate it into more sales. At this point, you may be in a different stage from where I am, a newbie digital product seller. Imagine this scenario: You are a small business owner and you have been selling locally, to neighbors, to your social media followers, but you are now thinking of going beyond your comfort zone. Making your product more accessible to more people is now your next goal. But with the fast-paced world of technology, you just did not find the time to keep up or it just did not pique your interest at any other time in the past before now. Sound familiar? Or you may be new to this concept altogether but you have the perfect product in mind for you and the skills to build sellable digital products. Now, you feel like it is time to build your online shop to make it easier for potential customers globally to find you and your product. Either way, read on to find out if this short read is worth recommending to your friends. If you are one of those who are eager to get a share of that pie like I am, I’m going to share with you some tips that I am also working on and hoping to achieve. There is no point in keeping these to myself, tbh. Knowledge and ideas are meant to be shared if we know they can help someone else out there. This is a huge market that is only getting bigger by the day and we can all grow from this. You see, the good thing about most digital products (and what drew me to it in the first place) is that market saturation is the least of your worries since you are selling globally. And if it is, so what? Be unique and you will find your own market, your own followers —this is better explained below coz that sounded quite vague, even to me. So, let’s get on with it. Setting Up Shop: Essential Steps to Consider To build an online shop to sell digital products successfully, there are several essential steps you can consider. To make things simpler, I have linked my sources for this article at the bottom so you will have a chance to check them out for yourself as well. Identify your digital product niche: Picking the right niche is crucial for the success of your online shop (Source1). Focus on a specific area or target market that aligns with your expertise and interests. For example, if you are good at sketching, you can offer sketched portraits which are perfect personalized gift items as your primary digital product. Research your target audience: Understand the needs and preferences of your potential customers. Conduct market research to identify their demands and create digital products that cater to those needs (Source 2). Say, you have a garden and you wish to share your gardening tips - your target audience will most likely be stay-at-home and work-at-home individuals who can benefit from having a garden at home. Your product could range from gardening courses or tutorials, e-books, and gardening products such as personalized planters and garden decor that you happen to be skilled at making. Create high-quality content: Ensure that your digital products are of top-notch quality. This need not even be said. Creating and selling digital products is a labor of love. Whether it's an ebook, an artwork, handmade crafts, software, or a course, invest time and effort in producing valuable content that meets the expectations of your customers (Source 2). Choose the right platform: Select an e-commerce platform that specializes in selling digital products. Look for features such as secure file hosting, automated delivery, and customizable product options (Source 3). Popular e-commerce platforms right now are Amazon, e-Bay, Shopify, Etsy, Aliexpress, Shopee, olx, and many many more. Set up an online store: Build your online store using the chosen e-commerce platform. Customize the design, layout, and branding of your shop to create a unique and visually appealing storefront (Source 3). Implement secure payment gateways: Ensure that your online shop has secure payment gateways to protect customer information and facilitate smooth transactions. Popular options include PayPal, Stripe, and Square (Source 4). Automate product delivery: Set up an automated system to deliver digital products to customers upon purchase. This can include sending download links via email or directing customers to a secure download page (Source 5). Drive traffic to your shop: Implement marketing strategies to attract potential customers to your online shop. This can include content marketing, social media promotion, email marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO) (Source 4). Provide excellent customer support: Offer responsive and reliable customer support to address any inquiries or issues that may arise. This can build trust and encourage customers to make repeat purchases (Source 1). As you go along, continually monitor and analyze the performance of your online shop and make necessary adjustments to improve its success. You can make a few tweaks to your marketing strategy and adapt to changes once in a while. Keep on with the strategies that work, of course, but improve and develop them gradually if you feel that you have to and if your data shows you need to. Moreover, understand that I am also learning as I am putting this out. But if you have any questions, ask away. I will try to answer them if I can or direct you to websites that have been my go-to for similar questions. If you have questions that I haven’t even thunk of, okay kidding— thought of, then that would be even sweeter because that means more input for me, too. I love ideas and I would love to hear them from you. • Digital Products: Are they profitable? Which ones sell best?

With all that is going on in the world, I needed a distraction that was productive. But nothing seemed to be working. I mean, I would plan the day as usual, but end up doing something else entirely. Or I may think of picking up my MacBook to start working on something but would just stare at it and get zero done. I turn on the TV or look at my phone and I see the saddest things happening to people who I'm sure do not deserve all the abuse, the atrocities, the pain, so on and so forth. My productivity has slumped and it is bringing me down, and because I am down it further affects my productivity. Like in a vicious cycle. And it's not something I enjoy. Today, I gently coaxed myself into writing since it’s usually the only thing that would snap me out of whatever it is that keeps me in my head. I finally decided to tackle two of the most common questions that come up on internet searches regarding digital products as a side hustle: "Is it profitable to sell digital products online? and "Which digital products are in demand (or sell best)?" And "Why digital products?", you ask. It is because, at the moment, I am working on a digital product that I am going to drop soon on Shopify. So since I already have a little knowledge of it, why don't I expand what little I know of it and share it with you? As I set about phrasing and paraphrasing material I got from the internet for answers, I realized that these were the very same questions I had asked not so long ago. In a way, this whole exercise is a self-reminder to get me back on track. Collecting the list below (so you won’t have to) is one way of redirecting my focus back toward one of my goals for this year. Is it profitable to sell digital products online? To answer the first question, YES, digital products can be highly profitable to sell online. If you are eyeing digital product distribution as your additional source of income, you won't hear any discouraging words from me. If you have the skill or maybe just an interest in learning to create digital products, this might be worth looking into. Yes, by all means, do your pros and cons but maybe the following might go under your pros column. Lower production costs -- many digital products can be created on free apps like Canva. The free version is a great starting point to familiarize yourself with its features and get yourself into the zone. You can check out free Canva tutorials on YouTube if you feel you need to. You can opt for the Pro version as well if you want to take advantage of its premium features. Ease of distribution -- by signing up as a seller on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, etc..., bam! your products are good to go. You can start selling immediately versus having to go through the hassle and expense of renting a commercial space to showcase your items; or storing and shipping physical products if it's an online store. The potential for passive income -- with digital products, you only have to create the product once. You won’t have to be hands-on 24/7 nor worry about shelf-life and product availability as long as your seller account is up and your item is actively up for sale. Which digital products are in demand (or sell best)? These are just some of the most profitable digital products you can consider selling: 1. E-books: If you have expertise in a particular field or a passion for writing, creating and selling e-books can be a lucrative venture. Topics can range from self-help and personal development to cookbooks, guides, or educational content. 2. Online courses: Share your knowledge and skills by creating and selling online courses. Platforms like Udemy, Teachable, or Thinkific allow you to create and monetize your courses easily. Popular topics include business, marketing, photography, fitness, and language learning. 3. • Raising Pets: 8 ways to be an effective pet parent

Being an effective pet parent is crucial for the well-being, happiness, and longevity of your four-legged buddy. It can be frustrating at times, yes. And can be really scary, too. There will be instances where you might be harming them without realizing it, like giving your puppy a bite of chocolate bar because he gives you the sweetest puppy face. Trivia: Theobromine, a compound found in cocoa/chocolate, is toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals (source). Or, worse, you may even feel like you can't take care of your pet anymore. It does happen. But don't fret. Pet care is a selfless act indeed and is a big part of pet parenting. But it sure does not have to be complicated. Here are some tips: 1. Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about your pet's specific needs such as diet, exercise requirements, grooming routines, and potential health issues. You have to stay updated on the latest information on pet care from books, online resources, pet professionals, and other pet parents. In this way, you can DIY the answers to common pet care dilemmas instead of spending so much on something that you could have easily done yourself. Or racking up vet bills for pet health emergencies that you could have easily prevented. Being educated on the various aspects of caring for your pets is one way to solve your problems when you can't afford pet care but love pets wholeheartedly nonetheless. 2. Create a Safe Environment: Ensure that your home is safe for your pet by removing any hazards or toxic substances from their reach. This may include plants, our table food, and home decor that can be harmful to them. Cats and dogs like to nibble, lick, or eat certain plants around the house and when they're outside. I know mine does, like, they actually have favorites! Quick tip: Download a plant app on your phone. What I do is take a snapshot of the plant in question and find out if they are pet safe. You don't have to chuck your plants out if they're not. Just put them where they're less accessible. Also, it is important to provide your pets with appropriate toys and bedding to keep them comfortable. Schedule regular check-ups with a trusted veterinarian to monitor your pet's health and address any concerns promptly. Vaccinations, preventive treatments for parasites, and dental care should also be prioritized. We always say prevention is better than cure that is why we try to eat right and live right as much as we can. The same goes for our pets. 4. Balanced Diet: Feed your pet a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs based on their age, breed, and size. If you want to feed them from your own kitchen, make sure you are aware of what food is healthy for them. Some of our staples in the kitchen can be toxic to our pets so it is important to familiarize ourselves with what is harmful to our pets and what can make them sick. Trivia: Common food ingredients garlic and onions are poisonous to cats and dogs (source). Consult with a veterinarian or animal nutritionist if necessary. 5. Exercise & Mental Stimulation: Engage in regular physical activities that suit your pet's energy level and abilities. Taking our pet dogs out for a walk regularly not only benefits our dog's health and mood, it also improves ours. We get to complete our steps while they get their dose of socializing. Have you seen how happy they get when they see other dogs outside? Mine just aggressively barks at much larger dogs, which looks comical, but I still count it as stimulation. Additionally, provide mental stimulation through interactive toys or puzzle games to prevent boredom. 6. Bonding Time & Affection: Spend quality time bonding with your pet through playtime, belly rubs, and cuddles! Show affection regularly so they feel loved and secure in their environment. It makes them want to be around you and you want that. Affiliate Ad Travel rent-free as a House-sitter and Pet-sitter anywhere in the world! Positive Reinforcement Training Techniques: Use positive reinforcement methods when training your pet instead of punishment-based techniques. Reward good behavior with treats or praise to encourage desired actions. But when in doubt, seeking help from the right training professionals is always beneficial. 8. Grooming Routine: Establish a grooming routine based on the needs of your specific pet. Bathing, brushing their coat regularly (especially for long-haired breeds), trimming nails carefully, and cleaning ears consistently are all important aspects of maintaining hygiene. It keeps them free from skin diseases and their coat/fur healthy which in turn makes them safe to be around other family members, our friends, and kids. So, if you are wondering why is pet care important, it is simply because this is a proven way we can ensure the health and safety of our pets and promote a healthy long life - within reason of course. Once in a while, you will encounter hiccups but you have to learn to be patient. Remember that being an effective pet parent requires dedication and commitment but offers countless rewards in return. • This is how you make money from urban gardening

What is an urban garden? Why is it important for you and me, and for our planet? First things first. An urban garden or urban farm is, quite simply, a garden in a city. They can be in house terraces/balconies, back (or front) yards, indoors, windowsills, green roofs, or in community gardens. As long as they are situated within a city or in an urban setting, then yes, that's right you're looking at an urban garden. Needless to say, the reasons why urban gardening is important are aplenty. *Hints: food security, oxygen* Note: This post may include affiliate links to products that could earn me a small commission at no additional cost to you if you decide to buy through one of those links. Thank you for your support. Apart from the obvious - that vegetable/edible plants provide us with fresh air to breathe and fresh, nutritious food right in our own homes, the positive impact of greens on our immediate environment has been widely studied and scientifically proven. Gardens and vegetation help to reduce "urban heat island effect" in developed and populated cities according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. Multiple studies also show that urban gardens are a solution to energy poverty - not to mention a solution to world hunger. Apparently, these urban farms create a phenomenon called "urban green space cooling effect". Read more about this bit of information on the links provided here and here. Can you earn a living with urban gardening? How? The short answer is YES. Did you know that in addition to the benefits just mentioned, urban gardening has plenty more to offer? As if food security isn't a big enough reason, urban gardening has become another popular way for non-traditional farmers to make money in today's increasingly modernized world. The pandemic may have had a hand in popularizing the horticultural hobby among the younger generations, and certainly rekindled the interest of the not-so-young ones. In order to start earning from plants, you have to grow them first. Duh. To get started with your very own urban garden, you need to identify an area in the city that is suitable for plant cultivation. Take note that for community garden projects, you will first need proper assessment and planning to be able to obtain a permit. Make sure to check out the guidelines in your city or locality at the very beginning as this will help you streamline your planning stage. If that sounds intimidating, stop and think of the fun you're going to have once the energy of your whole community goes into full swing. It might help you get back in perspective and get your groove going again. Affiliate Ad Growing Veggies -- companion planting, how to grow the best tomatoes and potatoes, and many more! Learn from a world-renowned plant nutrition and disease expert When selecting a spot for the garden, consider the amount of sunlight and water available for that area. Some plants require full sunlight while some require a bit of shade. For many apartment and high-rise building dwellers, the terrace and window sills are popular spots to grow a mini herb garden using pots and planters. Additionally, it is important to consider the local climate and soil quality. In some instances, a greenhouse may be a viable option. Once an ideal spot is found, the next step is to prepare the soil for planting. This includes tilling the soil and adding organic matter, such as compost, to improve the soil's fertility. After the soil is properly prepared, it is now time for you to decide which plants to grow. Store-bought soil is also suitable as they are already formulated for certain plant categories but in some cases, you may need to do some modifications such as adding mulch, bark, or perlite to the soil according to specific plant needs. Depending on the space available, a great variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs can be grown. You can also look into hydroponics, aquaponics, and vertical gardening if you want to maximize your space. Affiliate Ad Planning to live off the grid? The Self-sufficient Backyard: For the Independent Homesteader Learn how to transform a typical money-draining house into a tiny self-sufficient homestead Granting you are blessed with a good harvest, the next step is to market the products from your garden. Farmers' markets, local grocery stores, and online marketplaces are great places to start. Additionally, selling directly to restaurants and other businesses can be a great way to make money. Finally, it is important to ensure the garden is properly maintained. This includes weeding regularly, watering plants, and harvesting the produce when it is ready. By following these steps, you can make money from urban gardening while providing fresh produce for your own table. As awareness continues to grow in topics concerning sustainability and promoting food security, urban gardening or urban agriculture/horticulture has become a great way for people to earn extra cash while also providing themselves and their local community with fresh, locally-grown produce. This practice not only benefits you but also gives back to the community and the environment. In more ways than one, urban farming is profitable if we put our minds, a bit of our time, and a certain amount of effort into it. • 6 simple steps to grow your own urban garden, mindfulness included

Note: This post may include affiliate links to products that could earn me a small commission at no additional cost to you if you decide to buy through one of those links Thank you for your support. Growing an urban garden is a great way to save money on fresh vegetables, enjoy the benefits of locally sourced produce, and yet another productive way to spend quality time - whether by yourself or in the company of friends and loved ones. Starting and cultivating an urban garden requires careful planning and lots of hard work but that is where the fun in gardening is, isn't it? Here are the steps: First, decide what kind of vegetables you would like to grow. For beginners like I am, tomatoes, peppers/chilies, and herb varieties like spring onions, mint, and chives are pretty straightforward. They thrive with minimum effort - not that I am encouraging you to do the minimum because tbh, everything in life requires us to pitch in a little effort if we expect to get the results we want. Again I am digressing. However, if you want to go all in on your urban garden, consider the amount of sun and space available and choose vegetables that will thrive in those conditions. You can choose plants based on whether you want to grow them in plant boxes, in vertical gardens, or in pots indoors or on your porch or balconies. Second, prepare the soil. Test the soil to determine the pH level and add amendments if needed. Till the soil and remove any weeds. Some gardeners may advise a no-till approach but there are certain criteria to be met with this and that involves having organically-rich soil to plant in and non-beginner gardeners who know exactly what they're doing. As a beginner myself, I think it is better to play safe, start small, and learn gradually from each gardening experience. These experiences may include a frustratingly high incidence of seedling murder (speaking from experience). Affiliate Ad Are you ready to take on an off-grid lifestyle? The Self-sufficient Backyard: For the Independent Homesteader Learn how to transform a typical money-draining house into a tiny self-sufficient homestead. Third, choose and purchase the right type of seed or seedlings. Make sure you select varieties that are suitable for your local climate. You can achieve this not only through reading (or watching) online references but also by speaking with other urban gardeners in your area. They may turn out to be your go-to plant people down the line. You'll know who they are when you walk around the block on fine mornings or afternoons. And if you don't find any, go a bit further - it's good cardio. If you aren't so lucky and your neighbors suck, the attendant at your local plant shop where you will eventually get to buy your seedlings might be the man (or woman) for all the information you need, so you can be the friendly urban gardener your block needs. Or not. You do you. Fourth, plant the seeds or seedlings. This goes without saying. Make sure to plant them at the correct depth and at the proper time of year. If you have doubts, you can refer to plenty of materials online. Or feel free to drop me a message if you think I can help. I'd be happy to provide references that I think would be helpful. Fifth, water and fertilize the plants regularly or as needed. Check for pests and take action if needed. Apart from ensuring they have adequate sunlight and water - meaning not too much and not too little either - you do not necessarily have to fuss over your new plants all the time to the point that it becomes a source of stress and anxiety. Gardening is supposed to be a relaxing hobby so you just have to enjoy the process. Let nature take its course and intervene only when you see changes that are not supposed to happen, i.e. presence of bugs, drying / wilting leaves, growth of weeds and fungus, etc. Affiliate Ad Aquaponics4You: Learn how to grow 10 times the plants in less time Finally, harvest once they are ready. Enjoy the fruits of your labor! There is nothing quite like it. With patience and care, you can start and cultivate an urban garden and enjoy the delicious benefits of fresh, local produce while enjoying your time in the process. Gardening can be a great form of meditation once you get the hang of it. For me, it's an effective way to stay connected with my inner self, free from invasive thoughts, to be grounded in the present, and to just experience the moment quietly and mindfully. Try it. • Tidying Up and Headspace: Why Decluttering Your Space is Self-care

Do you declutter? Do you keep your area and your surroundings tidy throughout the day? Do you allocate a specific schedule daily or weekly to tidy up and declutter your space? Or do you find it hard to commit to a routine to the point that you are forced to take the task on as a major project once every few months (or years!), often because it has caused you, or is actively causing you, so much stress to be around so much stuff and clutter in your own living spaces? (That was a mouthful) Sometimes you feel like you can't clean up the whole room but at least you try. And then there are days that you can barely get out of bed, just because. Well, guess what, it happens. So don't beat yourself up. You don't need to force yourself, either. You can work up the habit of regularly tidying up when you understand why you have to and when you decide for yourself that you actually want to. In your own time. Note: This post may include affiliate links to products that could earn me a small commission at no additional cost to you if you decide to buy through one of those links Thank you for your support. Why is it important to declutter our homes and spaces? Decluttering our homes and spaces plays a significant part in keeping our minds and bodies healthy. When our living and work spaces are filled with clutter as they accumulate over time, it can be overwhelming and distracting (source). It makes it difficult for us to focus on important tasks and it can be stressful to try to manage them all - the clutter and the tasks - all at once at the same time. iykyk. In my case, when my space isn't tidy and organized the way that I would like it to be, I feel like my mind, my senses, my entire consciousness get overwhelmed and my poor brain is unable to know where to start. I'm sure there is an English word for that. Well, let's just say it drives me nuts and I don't even notice the fact until it affects other aspects of my life where I eventually end up releasing the build-up of my frustration, like snapping at someone for the tiniest bit of reason. Or worse. You know, like eating their snacks and not replacing them and pretending like I did nothing. Affiliate Ad Find out how to make decluttering painless. Get the book here now: Declutter Fast by Mimi Tanner How to make your home in order - almost immediately Decluttering is an important part of self-care. Notice how a tidy space creates an environment that invokes a sense of calm which allows us to relax and think clearly. When we are surrounded by organized space, it is easier to focus on what's important, on what we should be doing right now, on what should be next on our plate, and on our goals and dreams. In other words, decluttering helps us to be more mindful of how we use our spaces and our time, and it can help us to be creative and more productive. Also, keeping your space neat and tidy reduces the stress of trying to find what you need the moment you need it - since you know where things are (most of the time at least) and all the important stuff is within easy access. Less clutter helps to make your home and other spaces brighter, roomier, and more livable. Additionally, our spaces have a big impact on our physical health. Messy spaces are perfect breeding grounds for germs, dust, and pests. Our home can also be home to plenty of disease-causing bacteria if we are not careful (source). A tidy and organized space is much easier to keep clean and sanitized. On the other hand, a disorganized and uncurated collection of boxes, files, wires, and a myriad of stuff lying around can harbor undetermined amounts of questionable microorganisms that you (or your family members especially kids) would rather not be touching, inhaling, or ingesting. Finally, decluttering is an act of self-love. It shows that we care about our environment and our well-being, as well as that of our loved ones. It is a way to take control of our lives and create a space with an ambiance that we can be proud of. A space where we can peacefully live, thrive, and be our better selves. Decluttering helps us to make better use of our time and resources, and it can help us achieve a healthier and more balanced life. What is the easiest and most effective/sustainable approach to decluttering when keeping organized is a challenge Tidying up is an important habit that can be practiced by anyone from all ages and all walks of life. The easiest and most effective approach to decluttering is to start small. This is especially helpful for those who have trouble keeping their areas organized for any reason. If you are trying to teach your child how to tidy their bedroom or play space all by themselves, this approach could be helpful, too (source). Starting small means you begin by setting aside a few minutes to organize one small area. This could be a desk drawer, a closet shelf, a corner of a room, or anything else that needs to be sorted. As you work on this area, take the time to make decisions about what items to keep, donate, or discard. Additionally, it is equally important to create a system for managing your items. You are free to make up what system you would like it to be. This could include assigning a spot for specific things or investing in storage containers to help keep items organized and out of sight. Labeling storage boxes also works because it keeps you from rummaging through the wrong boxes and ending up with yet another pile of clutter to organize. When you can read the label what exactly is inside those boxes, i.e. blue and white Christmas baubles, or dive gear, or - I don't know, whatever you stow away in boxes to be used later, I suppose - it saves you a lot of precious time, energy, and patience. Set aside time each week to go through your items and remove any unnecessary items. Tidying up frequently throughout the month keeps clutter from accumulating. This will help you maintain your decluttered space much longer and make it easier to find what you need when you need it. As opposed to cleaning, which is to be done as frequently as possible, tidying up can be scheduled at longer intervals. Also, cleaning up after yourself and encouraging others to do so (meaning our significant others and/or housemates) reduces the amount of daily clutter around the house and minimizes the need for you to do it more often. In fact, once a month would be sufficient if all hands are on deck. Finally, don’t be afraid to enlist help. When clutter has taken over your space (and maybe your life), it can be a daunting task to tackle. Ask a friend or family member to help you sort through your items and provide you with moral support coz you're gonna need it. If you have become somewhat of a hoarder, it can be painful to let go of things even though those items have long served their purpose in your life. Having someone to help keep you accountable and motivated can be a great way to ensure you stick to a routine. With simple baby steps, you can get your home easily and sustainably neat and organized - even possibly develop the habit in the long run, essentially making decluttering a routine task. You will also be able to share the practice of tidying up with your kids, other family members, and friends -- which I personally think is one of the best gifts we can share with our loved ones. Nobody wants a slob, not even if it's ourselves. I tried not to say it but I did anyway. Thank you for your support. Weight gain can be caused by multiple factors. According to the NHS (National Health Service, UK), when excess calories are stored in the body as fat, it generally leads to obesity. The most obvious solution then is to burn calories and/or reduce caloric intake. It may as well be. But for a lot of us, this solution isn't always feasible and in some cases, that isn't even the issue at all. It is a hundred other things combined. So, it is important that we understand how our body regulates or metabolizes our food intake and the organ that is responsible for doing all the important work related to this: the liver.
